If you’re planning a summer trip to Yas Island, the first thing to know is this: summer here is real, but it is also the easiest season to plan around. Abu Dhabi was practically built for the heat. Almost everything that matters is indoors, air-conditioned, and connected. Get your timing right and you’ll have a brilliant few days — often with shorter queues and lower hotel rates than the cooler months. Here is how locals actually do it.
Understand the daily rhythm
From roughly June through September, daytime temperatures sit high and humidity climbs near the coast. The trick is to flip your day around the heat rather than fight it. Mornings before about 11am and evenings after sunset are the comfortable windows for anything outdoors. The middle of the day — late morning to late afternoon — is indoor time. Think of it as a siesta culture: you go hard early, retreat to the cold during peak sun, then come back out when the island cools and lights up.
What stays open in summer
Almost everything you came for. The big indoor attractions run year-round and are built precisely for days like these. Yas Waterworld is open through summer and is more pleasant in the heat than in winter — you’re in the water anyway. Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World are fully indoor and climate-controlled, which makes them the strongest mid-day picks on the island. Yas Mall keeps its normal hours and becomes a natural anchor for the hottest part of the afternoon. Restaurants, hotel pools, and the cinemas all stay open. The one thing to manage is outdoor walking between venues — that’s where summer catches visitors out.
Build your day around AC-strong anchors
A simple summer itinerary looks like this. Start outdoors early — a short marina or boardwalk walk, breakfast, maybe a morning pool session at your hotel while the sun is still gentle. As the heat builds, move to a fully indoor attraction: Ferrari World or Warner Bros. World will happily absorb four or five hours without you ever feeling the sun. Break for a long, unhurried lunch. In the late afternoon, if you want water, Yas Waterworld is ideal because you stay wet and cool. Then come out again in the evening for dinner and a stroll once temperatures drop. The goal is to never be standing in direct sun for long stretches in the middle of the day.
Hydration is the whole game
This is the part visitors underestimate. The dry heat means you lose water without feeling especially sweaty, so you can get dehydrated before you notice. Drink water steadily through the day rather than waiting until you’re thirsty. Carry a refillable bottle — there are water points and shops everywhere, so you’re never far from a top-up. Go easy on caffeine and alcohol during the daytime, as both speed up dehydration. If you’re at the waterpark, it’s easy to forget to drink because you’re surrounded by water; set a reminder. Families with young kids should be especially deliberate here, offering water at every stop.
Dress for it
Light, loose, breathable clothing in pale colours is far more comfortable than tight or dark fabrics. A hat and proper sunglasses make outdoor stretches more bearable, and sunscreen is non-negotiable even on the short walks. One local quirk worth knowing: indoor air conditioning is strong, sometimes very strong. After a day of dressing for 40-plus degrees, you may actually want a light layer for heavily chilled malls, cinemas, and restaurants. Pack a thin cover-up — you’ll use it.
Getting around without melting
Minimise open-air walking in the middle of the day. Taxis and ride-hailing are plentiful and cheap by international standards, and the few minutes of cool car beats a long walk in peak sun. Many of the major venues connect to covered parking and shaded drop-offs, so plan your arrivals to land you as close to the entrance as possible. If you’re staying on the island, you can often reach your anchor attraction with only a minute or two of outdoor exposure — use that to your advantage.
Evenings are the reward
Once the sun sets, Yas Island comes back to life. The marina, the boardwalk, and Yas Bay all become lovely places to walk, eat, and sit outside. This is when you do your outdoor sightseeing, your long dinners, and your sunset photos. Summer evenings here can be warm and still, but they’re a world away from the mid-day glare — and there’s something special about a quiet, glowing waterfront after a day spent indoors.
Where to base yourself
Summer travel is far easier when your cool, comfortable base is a short hop from everything. At Casa Duna, we host guests who want to do Yas Island the smart way — out early, indoors through the heat, and back out for the evening — without long commutes eating into the comfortable hours. If you’re planning a summer visit, we’re happy to help you time it right.
