Yas Island guide

Yas Island is a purpose-built leisure island in Abu Dhabi. Four theme parks, the Formula 1 circuit, an 18,000-seat arena, a beach and two waterfront dining strips sit within roughly 10 minutes of each other by car. Nothing here is far. Almost none of it is walkable.

That second part is what most guides leave out, and it changes how you plan a day.

What is actually near you

The one genuinely walkable stretch is the canal promenade outside the building, which is good at sunset and has electric scooters in the courtyard. Everything else is a short drive, and in summer that is a mercy rather than an inconvenience.

The theme parks

You can do one a day and still be home for a swim.

• Ferrari World. Home of Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest rollercoaster at 240 km/h. Summer hours are 12pm to 8pm on weekdays and 11am to 8pm on Saturdays and Sundays, not the 10am opening you will see on older pages. ferrariworldabudhabi.com
• SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. A large indoor marine park built around a multi-species aquarium, and fully air-conditioned, which matters from May onward. seaworldabudhabi.com
• Warner Bros. World. Entirely indoors. DC superheroes and Looney Tunes. The one to keep in reserve for the hottest afternoon of your trip. wbworldabudhabi.com
• Yas Waterworld. Over 70 rides, slides and experiences since the Lost City expansion opened in April 2026, including Matamir’s Drop, a 41-metre freefall slide that is the tallest in the UAE. Open 10am to 8pm most days. Thursday it closes at 3.30pm, and Friday is a women-only Ladies Day, when men are not admitted. yaswaterworld.com
• CLYMB Yas. Indoor skydiving and a tall indoor climbing wall in one venue. Quick, cool, and it works for the age gap where one child wants a rollercoaster and the other does not. Flying starts at age 3, climbing at age 4. Every Thursday until 30 September it is women only from 5pm to 10pm.

Two things we tell everyone: parks are quietest on weekday mornings, and the multi-park combinations on the official sites are worth five minutes of comparing before you buy anything.

F1, concerts and live shows

• Yas Marina Circuit, 8 minutes by car. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix runs 3 to 6 December 2026. Outside race week the circuit runs karting and drag nights most of the year. yasmarinacircuit.com
• Etihad Arena, 7 minutes by car, capacity 18,000. It books international tours year-round. We do not print a line-up here on purpose, because arena schedules move and a stale name is worse than none. Check the venue’s own what’s-on before you plan around a date.
• Yasalam After-Race Concerts run alongside the Grand Prix and are included with a race ticket.

Where to eat

• Yas Marina. The waterfront strip. CHAR for pan-Asian and steak, Aquarium for seafood, Iris for a rooftop that looks over the circuit, and The Garage. Book ahead on weekends.
• Yas Bay Waterfront. The newer promenade beside Etihad Arena, with Asia Asia and a run of casual places along the boardwalk. Easier with children and better at sunset.
• Yas Mall. Mama’esh for manakish, Operation: Falafel, and a full food court. This is the fast option on a park day, not a night out.

Beach and outdoors

• Yas Beach. Soft sand, calm water, daybeds and a restaurant. Day passes are AED 80 Monday to Thursday and AED 150 at weekends and on public holidays, with AED 50 of the weekend pass redeemable on food and drink. Open 10am to 7pm (checked 3 August 2026). • Yas Bay Waterfront. A 1.6 km promenade with food trucks, weekend markets and a play area. Free, and best after dark.

Getting around

• From the airport. You land at Zayed International, the closest airport to the island. We are not printing a drive time for that run, because every source we checked gave a different one, and we would rather measure it ourselves than pass on somebody’s guess. Careem and Uber both serve the island well, and most on-island rides run AED 12 to 30.
• Parking is covered and free in the building’s underground garage. Send us your plate before you arrive and we will register it, so you are not dealing with it at midnight.

Off the island

All by car, and all worth a half-day:

• Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, about 25 minutes. Free to enter, but book the access pass on the mosque website first, because a visit is not confirmed without one. Dress code is sleeves to the wrist, hem to the ankle and hair fully covered for women, long trousers for men, and it is worth bringing your own scarf. It closes to visitors around midday on Fridays and reopens in the afternoon. Go near sunset.
• Louvre Abu Dhabi, about half an hour, on Saadiyat Island. Closed on Mondays, which catches people out.
• The Corniche, about 25 minutes. Waterfront promenade with Emirates Palace and Etihad Towers at one end.
• Dubai Marina, roughly an hour. Doable as a day trip.

When to come, honestly

October to April is the easy season: 22 to 30°C, low humidity, everything outdoors at its best.

May to September is hot, 38 to 45°C, and we are not going to tell you otherwise. What we will tell you is how people actually do it. Two of the four parks are fully indoors and the third is water. Mornings before 11 and evenings after 6 are genuinely pleasant by the canal. The gap in the middle of the day is the part nobody plans for, and the answer is the mall or an indoor park.

September is the underrated one: the heat has started to break and the island is far quieter than December.

Pack sunscreen, a hat, light layers for fierce indoor air conditioning, a swimsuit, and something modest for the mosque. Tipping is not expected, and 10% is generous.
